wabi-sabi

by reems design

Leaning in to her love of travel and embracing of the beautifully simplistic nature of wabi-sabi mixed with her Egyptian heritage, Reem created a studio space where 1925 Parisian architecture meets the organic sensibility of wabi-sabi design.

THE PROCESS

Reem wanted her studio to blend her historic 1925 Parisian influenced home with a wabi-sabi style. The natural, organic aspects of wabi-sabi design honors her Egyptian heritage and originates from tea ceremonies in 16th century Japan.

Reem found sentimental inspiration from clay pots that she personally acquired from Egypt. Imperfect and raw vintage clay pots have been used for centuries in Egypt, and they played a pivotal role in the foundation of this design. Items made from natural elements such as stone, clay, and wood are noteworthy in this concept as they emphasize the beauty of nature. Keeping the space neutral, yet, adding a curvy, chocolate velvet sofa at the center of the studio space helps it feel welcoming and grounded.

THE RESULT

This design principle of simplicity allows serenity and calm. Having a space with some void areas create a more minimal look. Not every corner and space has to be filled. This allows natural light to flow freely through the space creating a sense of serene ambiance.

THE JOURNEY

“I was immediately drawn to the luxe look of Divine Flooring as soon as I  saw it in a design magazine. The materials look so upscale and elevated. I thought their flooring choices were second to none compared to other brands I looked at. A lot of their lines reminded me of Paris and Europe, and that’s what drew me in the most.”
