On Saturday, August 26 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm over 30 local breweries and restaurants will join forces in the fourth annual Barley & Smoke: Grillin’ for a Cure at Enmax Park (Elbow River Pathway & MacDonald Ave SE) when Calgary chefs and brew masters go head to head for the title of Best Beer, Best Beverage, Best BBQ, Best Street Food and Best Vendor Tent. The annual craft beer and BBQ food-tasting event raises funds for Kids Cancer Care.
“When I learned that only five per cent of cancer research funding in Canada goes to children’s cancer research, I knew we had to do something,” says Carlos Soares, Founder and President of Divine Flooring, and the man behind the vision of Barley & Smoke. “I had cancer as a young man and it’s rough. I can’t imagine watching your child go through it. At the end of the day, we’re motivated to offer hope and joy to children facing this disease. Our goal is to raise funds while having fun.”
Barley & Smoke is the only event of its kind that showcases local tastes and local talents to raise funds for a local children’s charity. A $125 ticket offers craft beer- and tapas-style food samples from all participating vendors, live music by country music star Ben Chase, outdoor games, and activities. A $225 V.I.P. ticket offers guests all of the above plus exclusive perks such as unlimited access to the V.I.P. private lounge featuring cocktails by Olive + Twist, wine by Calgary’s Urban Winery and Tasting Bar, concierge service and skip-the-line access to all food and beverage stations.
“We are so grateful to the many companies that come together and give their time and dollars to make Barley & Smoke such a successful event,” said Christine McIver, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Kids Cancer Care. “The food and beer are some of the best I’ve ever tasted and it’s all local! It’s such a good time and it’s doing so much good.”
Keg sponsors, Calbridge Homes, Divine Flooring, Eagle Builders, Foothills Creamery, Rangeland RV, Shaw Floors, and Stronghold Electric/Mechanical, and other companies are partnering to present the annual craft beer and BBQ food-tasting event and raise $125,000 for Kids Cancer Care.
Teams of designers and builders are also entering old western-themed playhouses that will be on display at the event and later installed at Kids Cancer Care’s Camp Kindle where kids affected by cancer can go back in time to play and forget about cancer. This year’s playhouses include a Towne Hall, Post Office, Blacksmith and Library. They will be added to the Old Western Towne already installed at Camp Kindle, which includes an old-time Schoolhouse, Bank, Saloon, Hotel, Bakery Café, Dress-up Shoppe, General Store, Theatre, Train Station and a Sheriff’s Office and Jailhouse.
